What is supracellar cistern?

The supracellar cistern is a cerebrospinal fluid-filled subarachnoid space that is located immediately superior to the pituitary gland, which is situated at the base of the brain. It is bordered by the optic chiasm anteriorly and the third ventricle posteriorly. The supracellar cistern is considered a critical structure in neurosurgical procedures due to its close proximity to important neurovascular structures such as the internal carotid artery, anterior communicating artery, and the optic nerves. Pathologies in this area can lead to the compression of these structures, resulting in various neurological symptoms.
